Last Friday we shared with you the story of a goat, who, due to no fault of his own, found himself on the wrong side of the law. He had foiled plot after plot to take him down – both by gun wielding police and bow and arrow wielding camouflage-clad would-be hunters, who were no match for the handsome wether. Thankfully, what did hit him was the kindness of a very compassionate marksman. His name is Manfred Zabinskas, from Five Freedoms Animal Rescue.
It’s no easy task to drop everything in your life at a moment’s notice so you can go the aid of an animal in dire need. The early mornings and late nights, missing out on dinners and holidays, like Christmas, with family and friends. One thing that people don’t realise when they hear the tales of animal rescues from charities such as ours, is the extent of self-sacrifice that goes on behind the scenes.
But that’s exactly what Manfred did on Friday – he sacrificed something so special to him, and his sacrifice speaks volumes about the person he is. August 13 marked the 15th anniversary of his dear brother Herb’s passing, and every year on that day Manfred would make his way to the beach where his ashes were scattered. But this year, instead of making the trek, Manfred responded to our urgent call for help to save the life of this certain goat, who now bears the name Herb.
We’d like to pay tribute to Manfred, and all the other friends to animals out there, who battle through the emotional toll and give up much of what is dear to them to be there for animals. But in saving them, we are also saving a part of ourselves. To know the world is fraught with injustice, saving the life of one truly does make the world of difference, not least for that one animal.
We’ve never met Herb, but we wholeheartedly believe he must have been a wonderful human to have a brother like Manfred. As they say, an apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Footnote: We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the other selfless heroes for animals who made Herb’s rescue possible, Cherie, Diana and Liz.
