Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe

The Great Escape- Meet Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe.
Still nervous to greet and quick to flee are Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe – four intrepid young lambs who had an inkling that theirs was not a good fate. Continual escapes from their paddock saw them looking down the barrel of a fast-track to their preordained fate. But something about their plucky resolve saw a call made to Edgar’s Mission instead, followed by the words, “They either come to you or the abattoir!”
Looking into the back of the trailer that carried the almost out of luck lambs, it was four terrified little faces that huddled into a corner returning our gaze- their vulnerability and innocence was not lost on us. With the words, “You’re safe now little ones,” whispered lovingly in their ears, Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe were, one by precious one, carried to the new barn of their forever home. Tic being the bravest girl fronts the group, while Tac happily stands behind her, every now and then doling out a sisterly shove as if to say, “No, you go first.” Tiny Toe is the littlest waif who just melts your heart, while Joe, the sole male of the contingent, dutifully keeps a little distance between him and his siblings.
While animals like Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe may seek to escape the paddocks that contain them, it is truly we humans who need to escape our preconceived ideas that animals are accepting of their fates and that they proceed willingly to their death. As we remain comfortably unaware of how what (or who) we eat makes its way to our dinner table, we rarely consider what it means to life-loving animals like Tic, Tac, Toe and Joe. If only we could take everyone by the hand and lead them to the back of a livestock trailer….
It seems the animals are not the only ones who need to escape.
