Farm Hand (Afternoon Shift)

The role:

To provide high-quality care for rescued farmed animals ensuring they have all the necessary conditions to lead a good life. Key to this role is tending to the end of day requirements of the sanctuary which involves feeding, medicating and bedding down animals as needed.  As chickens never want to go to bed early your commencement time and knock off time will be dictated by them which is around dusk (around 6.00pm in winter moving to 9.00pm in summer). This position requires a commitment to the smooth running of the sanctuary in areas of hygiene, safety, maintenance and animal health.

You will have:

  • Excellent animal observation skills
  • Good interpersonal skills with a positive attitude towards advocating on behalf of farmed animals.
  • Personal commitment to the goals and values of Edgar’s Mission and the promotion of kindness.
  • Experience in handling farmed animals with sound understanding of their health and behavioural needs.
  • Physical fitness and the willingness to perform manual and hands-on work in all weather conditions.
  • A professional, responsible and respectful approach to working as part of a team.
  • A flexible and proactive attitude with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities on a daily basis.
  • The ability to follow detailed instructions and use initiative to solve problems.
  • Reliable with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work alone and unsupervised.
  • A current driver’s licence.
  • Experience working at with farmed animals or at an animal sanctuary or shelter.
  • Excellent time management skills and attention to detail.

Senior Farm Hand

The role:

The role of an Edgar’s Mission farmhand is critical to our delivery of first-class care to our many residents.  Often animals arrive in very poor states of health, with not only physical injuries but psychological damage as well.  A key role of our farmhand carer is to ensure animals heal, both mentally and physically, in their own time.  In addition to this, every animal, every day, is to be tended to as well as ensuring the animal’s environment is safe, hygienic and enriched.

You will have:
