Sanctuary Manager

Edgar’s Mission is a not for profit sanctuary for rescued farmed animals that seeks to create a humane and just world for humans and non-humans. Set on 153 peaceable acres situated just outside of Lancefield, the sanctuary is nestled in the tranquillity of the Macedon Ranges. Edgar’s Mission has global reach with over a million YouTube views.
Through education, outreach, advocacy, community enrichment and sanctuary tours, Edgar’s Mission encourages people to expand their circle of compassion to include all animals.

The visitor experience for tour members, students, corporate volunteers and others is a key ingredient in our work, ensuring all have the opportunity to learn about the unique nature of farmed animals.

About the role:
Reporting to the Founder and Director, the Sanctuary Manager role is integral to the future growth of the multi-million-dollar sanctuary. Because of the high-profile nature of this profit for purpose organisation, it is essential that the Sanctuary Manager be an authentic advocate for animal well-being.

The Sanctuary Manager will be responsible for:

  • Oversee high standard of animal care and husbandry
  • Day-to-day rostering of farmhands and animal carers
  • Performance management of a multi-functional team of around 10 staff
  • Inventory management (including animal feed and supplies)
  • Pasture and land management: ensuring the efficient and sustainable use of sanctuary’s land
  • Waste management
  • Engagement and management of contractors as required
  • Maintaining the sanctuary to high standards at all times ensuring it is clean, safe, well presented, bio secure and fire ready
  • Enhancing visitor experience

Skills and attributes required for this role: 

  • Ability to communicate with staff, key stake holders and suppliers
  • Tertiary qualifications in agriculture, veterinarian or related will be highly regarded
  • Previous experience as a sanctuary manager or farm manager
  • Motivation to lead a team and foster a culture of engagement
  • Attention to detail
  • Skills in MS Office suite and CRM maintenance
  • Self-accountability
  • Personable nature
  • Adaptability
  • Resilience

Essential criteria:

  • Working with Children Clearance
  • National Police Criminal History Check
  • Victorian Driver’s License

Reporting to the Sanctuary Manager and Operations Manager, The People and Culture Manager role is vital to the future growth of this ground-breaking not for profit organisation and will be responsible for the following:

  • Fostering a culture of engagement to achieve a productive and happy team
  • Providing strategic and operational responsibility support to leadership team through professional advice
  • Implementing and managing HR initiatives, programs and services
  • Supporting organisational growth by driving change and introducing sustainable processes
  • Recruiting for future staffing and volunteer requirements

Skills and attributes required for this role:

  • Ability to build strong relationships
  • Passion for social justice, animal protection and people and culture
  • Committed to the goals and values of Edgar’s Mission and the promotion of kindness
  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications highly regarded
  • Strong skills in MS Office suite and CRM maintenance
  • A flexible and proactive attitude with the ability to adapt to changing needs and priorities daily
  • Extensive generalist experience across the entire HR spectrum including:
    • workforce planning, recruitment, employment relations, performance management, employee engagement, change management, grievance resolution and award interpretation
  • Drive change and influence behaviours
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply human resource policies, safety legislation and industrial agreements
  • Sound understanding of contemporary HRM issues and practices and a successful track record in delivering HR services
  • Previous experience creating a People & Culture function from the ground up
