Position summary

The role of an Edgar’s Mission farmhand/animal carer is critical to our delivery of first-class care to our many residents.  Often animals arrive in very poor states of health, with not only physical injuries but psychological damage as well.  A key role of our farmhand/animal carer is to ensure animals heal, both mentally and physically, in their own time.  In addition to this, every animal, every day, is to be tended to as well as ensuring the animal’s environment is safe, hygienic and enriched.

Organisational environment

Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary is a not-for-profit farm sanctuary with a vision for a humane and just world for all. Edgar’s Mission is set on 153 peaceable acres near Lancefield, Victoria (Australia), about 60 km north of Melbourne.

We rescue and provide sanctuary to animals in need, currently providing lifelong love and care to over 450 rescued animals. Through education, outreach, advocacy, community enrichment and farm tours, we encourage people to expand their circle of compassion to include all animals.

Reports

This position reports to the Farm Manager.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Daily provision of food and water for animals.
  • Undertake daily health care checks, monitoring appearance, behavioural or health changes, taking corrective action and informing manager as needed.
  • Administer medication to animals as instructed.
  • Schedule and carry out preventative treatments and maintenance for all animals, including but not limited to hoof trimming, drenching, vaccinations.
  • Maintain biosecurity.
  • Ensure animal records are current and accurate for all animals and entered correctly.
  • Arrange veterinary treatment for animals as needed.
  • Transport animals to and from vet as needed.
  • Undertake cleaning and hygiene management as needed

  • Has experience working with sheep, cattle, pigs or horses.
  • Is able to perform strenuous labour and be physically fit.
  • Is committed to the goals of Edgar’s Mission.

 Key selection criteria

  • Experience working in an animal care capacity, particularly with farmed animals.
  • A demonstrated commitment to animal welfare, either through paid or volunteer work with animals.
  • A commitment to the goals of Edgar’s Mission.
  • A certificate or diploma in animal care would be well-regarded.

Important stuff

  • This is a full-time position.
  • Starting hours vary according to season (i.e. earlier start in summer) and may involve afternoon shift work.
  • Salary range is $19.30 – $21.50 per hour depending on experience, plus superannuation.
  • The usual working week involves either a Saturday or Sunday.

Position summary

The role of Edgar’s Mission Farm Manager (part time) is to support the Senior Farm Manager on the days they are not present at the sanctuary, helping to deliver the organisation’s commitment to providing a safe and fulfilling workplace environment. This role is critical to ensure the smooth running of the sanctuary, as well as the safety of its animals, staff, volunteers and visitors.  This position supervises the sanctuary’s farmhands and volunteers to maintain a high quality of care for the resident animals as well as maintaining the sanctuary grounds and pastures to our exacting standards.

  • Provide ongoing management of day to day farm tasks and training where necessary. This will include, but is not limited to; ensuring daily provision of food and water for animals, cleaning and maintenance of animal housing and farm structures and property, daily animal health checks.
  • Apply health and safety standards across the farm
  • Ensure farm is ready for deadlines, such as tours, events and filming
  • Maintain biosecurity.
  • Maintaining stock levels of feed and supplies.
  • Maintain all staff and volunteer records in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ensure that staff leave is managed and recorded (including annual leave, public holidays, sick leave, bereavement leave and scheduled days off).
  • Arrange transportation for animals as needed.
  • Staff and volunteers are involved to understand the organisations targets, their role in achieving these targets and encouraged to contribute when developing day to day plans.
  • Comply with relevant Occupational Health and Safety requirements
